PS4

The PS4 is now an official thing. It officially exists, and from what we've been told so far it looks pretty awesome.

With Tech Radar in attendance at the event on the 20th Feb, Sony revealed some tantalising details about the PlayStation 4 hardware specs, along with some amazing software features that the new console will have.

Sadly, and almost unbelievably, we STILL don't know what the PS4 looks like. However, we do know it's coming out in the US in time for Christmas 2013, we know about the DualShock 4 controller and we've seen the new interface and a lot of the features it delivers. Here's everything we know about the PlayStation 4 so far...

PS4 release date

All we know about the PS4 release date so far is "Holiday 2013". That's the only detail Sony revealed at the launch and it's unclear which territories it applies to. Most likely it means the the U.S. and almost certainly Japan as well. We have a feeling the U.K. and Europe may have to wait a little longer, maybe even until early 2014.

This is pretty much what happened with Sony's previous consoles - the PS3 came out in the EU in March - and is backed up by various leaks and rumours. At least you'll have plenty of time to save up if you live outside of Japan or the USA.

Zavvi has listed a UK release date of 31st December which seems extremely unlikely - launching a few days after Christmas? Surely that's retail suicide.

PS4: Hardware specs

AMD, as we guessed all along, is coursing through this new system's veins.

Post-event, Sony revealed the system runs on a single-chip custom processor and utilizes eight x86-64 AMD Jaguar CPU cores, with a next-gen AMD Radeon based graphics engine powering the way.

So it's very much a PC-based system then, which is great news for developers who will find it much easier to code games for the next gen consoles and for PCs. However, that CPU is hardly next-gen - it may have been modified for this system but the AMD Jaguar platform is by no means the fastest of its kind - indeed it's slower than Intel's fastest by orders of magnitude.

·         You can pre-order the PS4 from these stores: ShopToGAME

However, with fewer redundancies than a PC has, the PS4 will certainly be able to make use of every single Watt of power it draws.

The "highly enhanced PC GPU" is another story. It's another AMD part - something along the lines of a Radeon 7850 card - and packs 18 GCN units. That may sound a like a lot of techy mumbo jumbo but what it essentially means is that the GPU packs 18 processing clusters, each packing up to 64 cores. That provides a lot of parallel processing power, and will thus handle the majority of the PS4's grunt work. It hits 1.84 TFLOPS of processing mojo. This is a far more powerful component than the Jaguar CPU and is rumoured to have the edge on the GPU inside the Xbox 720.

Sony announced at the NYC event that the console will even use GPU compute features to take advantage of the GPU's raw power - it'll be used for general computation tasks as well as making games shiny.

Memory

The PS4 will ship packing 8GB of GDDR5 memory. That's some super-fast stuff right there and should enable lightning fast performance.

Indeed, Sony has revealed that you will be able to power down the PS4 mid-game and then switch it on again in seconds and pick up right where you left off. That's the sort of loading power that this memory enables.

Other specs

We're also looking at Blu-ray disk support plus good ol' DVD, plus HDMI output support as well as Analog-AV out and an optical digital output.

PlayStation 4 Eye

What's really grabbing though is the development of the PlayStation 4 Eye, a newly developed camera system that utilizes two high-sensitivity camera equipped with wide-angle lenses and 85-degree diagonal angle views.

Sony said the cameras (amounting to 1280 x 800 pixels) can cut out the image of a player from the background or differentiate between players in the background and foreground, enhancing game play handily. There's also mention of logging in using facial recognition and using voice and body movements to play games "more intuitively."

If you want to know how these specs stack up against what we know so far about the Xbox 720 (clue: PS4 is more powerful) - check out our comparison of PS4 and Xbox 720 specs.

PS4 controller: DualShock 4

The PS4 controller comes in the form of the DualShock 4 pad. Very much a classic design, the DualShock 4 nevertheless offers upgraded vibrations, enhanced motion sensors and a Vita-like touchpad on the front.

PS4 user interface

The XrossMediaBar (XMB) interface of PlayStations past has been completely ditched in the PS4, with Sony instead choosing to design a new OS that looks a lot more like that of the Xbox 360 than the PS3.

Will the PS4 be 4K capable?

In a chat with Kotaku, Sony has revealed that the PlayStation 4 will be able to playback 4K/Ultra HD video. However, it will not upscale to 4K or play games at 4K resolution.

Sony has also confirmed that it will definitely launch a 4K movie service on the PS4 and is looking at ways it can get around the 100GB downloads required.

Backwards compatibility

The PS4 will definitely not offer native support for PS3 games. However, there will at some point be a service on the Sony Entertainment Network that offers server-side emulation and streaming of games from PS One classics right through to PS3 Platinum Editions.

Modern Warfare 4 is coming

We’ve come a long way since Modern Warfare 3 was released. It’s been 2 and a half years since we’ve heard the first whispers of Modern Warfare 3 hitting the shelves. Black Ops 2 was released in November, roughly 5 months. Not only that, Black Ops II took to the bank 1 billion dollars in 15 days. Activision has gotten better at selling copies Call of Duty on a yearly basis.
I mean, it took 17 days for the box office seller Avatar to reach 1 billion dollars. It took Modern Warfare 3 a day less to reach 1 billion. Activision plans to break this record again in the future. If they plan to do that, I think they’ll come back with a well known name. That name is Modern Warfare. But that’s not the only reason why I think Call of Duty: MW4 is the final name of the next Call of Duty title. There’s a lot of reasons…
The name has been thrown around for a while now.
Modern Warfare 3 was months away from release, Sledgehammer Games was excited to show interest in working on MW4.When the name has been thrown around for a while, it usually is the smartest marketing move to bank on it.

Sledgehammer Games says so.
Sledgehammer Games made a listing for a job. The listing said it’s for the next title in the Call of Duty franchise. Going by Sledgehammer Games’ interest in making the next Modern Warfare title, I’m inclined to think that the next Call of Duty title is a Modern Warfare title.
Neversoft says so.
There was a massive leak by a Neversoft insider stating that MW4 is in development. There’s a quote that directly confirms that MW4 is indeed in development.
We expect it.
Still reading, and still second guessing? Well, there are a lot of rumors swirling that the next title is MW4.
Activision announced that it’s working on the next Call of Duty title.
During an investor call, the C.E.O. of the publishing arm of the Activision Blizzard, Inc. company said that a new Call of Duty title is coming in 2013.
Little details can lead as confirmation.
There was a scam going around on the internet, supposedly giving you a chance to get a Modern Warfare 4 beta before the game is released. It was shut down by the owner of the domain. This scam may not be much, but lends into my earlier point. If the name has been thrown around long enough, it’s a smart marketing move to use that name.
The steam is picking up
A lot of sites are speculating about Modern Warfare 4 for months. Like this one in January, from Offical PlayStation Magazine. And will continue until the reveal.
Unexpected Reveal? More like expected reveal, Activision!
An alleged Infinity Ward employee registered, and launched a website, called ““unexpectedreveal.com” The site teases that the next Call of Duty reveal is in a matter of weeks.  With Battlefield 4 being revealed on March 26th, this is quite the coincidence.
The teaser site infers that the next Call of Duty title is a Modern Warfare title. In fact, the screenshot was of Modern Warfare trademark: A blurry screen with “Objective Updated.” Most of the fonts used in these screenshots were in Modern Warfare style.
MP1st brings up an excellent point: There was a similar lead-up with Modern Warfare 3. So, why was Activision so quick to deny it to websites? We’re expecting it, Activision. No sense in hiding!

How to Install a Power Supply

If a computer won't start or computer diagnostic software indicates that the power supply is problematic, installing a new power supply may be your only option. Fortunately, this is one of the easier computer repair tasks to do. Plus, since the problem originates in the power supply, data loss isn't likely. Similarly, if you are building a new computer, you'll need to install all of its components including the power supply. In either case, the steps are primarily the same with the main difference being the removal of the old power supply in an existing system.
If you've previously used computer hardware diagnostics tools to inventory your system and have a printout handy, take that along to the computer repair store so that you can select the right power supply for your system. If you don't have a printout, the computer technician should be able to help you select a compatible component.
Because you'll be dealing with an electrical component, following all safety precautions is necessary. Make sure that the computer is completely unplugged from its power source. If you're working on an existing system, your original power supply could retain a charge even if it's not plugged in, so treat it with care.
After disconnecting the power, remove all jewelry and gather your tools. Unscrew the screws holding the case together and carefully remove the case. Place the screws in a safe location. Find the existing power supply and unbolt it as well as disconnect the cables attached to the motherboard and other devices. Slide the power supply out of the unit.
To install the new power supply, you'll want to first look at the back of the power supply unit to make sure its voltage switch is in the correct position for your country. Once the voltage switch is confirmed to be in the correct position, slide the unit into position and attach the cables to the motherboard and other devices such as CD-ROM drives. If you overlook an internal device, it won't have power and will not run, so make sure to pay close attention to all of the devices inside your system. Once all of the power connections have been made, align the unit in the mounting bracket so that you can bolt it into place.
Reassemble the computer case, plug in the system, and power on your computer. You can test individual components to make sure that they're receiving power or you can use computer diagnostic software to run a quick system-wide hardware test. If the system passes all of the computer hardware diagnostics tests, then your installation is complete. While it's not necessary to use computer diagnostic software as a final step, it's useful for making sure that your installation was a complete success.

How to Set Up a Wireless Network

Because setting up a wireless network requires an understanding of the systems that will make up that network, using pc diagnostics on each system before you begin is smart. For example, do you know the specifications for each computer? While it's not overly difficult to manually inventory each computer, computer diagnostic software can do it for you automatically with just a click of a button. Once an inventory has been generated for each computer, you can then print your inventories out and quickly see potential problems.
For example, you might realize that some of the computers run Windows XP while others run Windows Vista, Windows 7, or even Macintosh. You may also notice that some computers have wireless network adapters while others do not. You may even discover that some of the older network adapters do not support the wireless standard that your new wireless network will be running on.
Armed with this knowledge, you can prepare for the network set up. You may need to run down to the computer shop and buy a few wireless adapters. You may want to upgrade the operating systems of a few of the PCs to ensure compatibility. By running computer repair software beforehand, you can make these decisions and adjustments before setting up the network.
Once you've run the diagnostic computer repair software and know what you're dealing with, you can then start planning the network design. You'll need a wireless network router and compatible wireless network adapters for each computer. The router physically connects to your broadband Internet connection, so place it near your cable modem or DSL outlet. Initially, you will need to connect a computer to the router using a cable in order to configure the network. This is temporary. Once the network is set up, you can untether the computer and work wirelessly from that point forward.
During the configuration process, you'll use Internet Explorer to access the router. Use the documentation that came with your router for the specific address and password. For example, if you have a Linksys router, you'll enter “http://192.168.1.1” into Internet Express's address bar and use the username of “admin” and the password of “admin” in order to access the router's configuration interface.
While the specific steps will vary, the process is similar. You'll need to give your wireless network a name in the SSID field, choose an encryption type and passphrase, and set an administrative password.
Once the basic configuration has been set up, the next step is to connect the computers to the network. Assuming the network adapters have been installed and are turned on, turn on each computer and connect each one to the network individually. Do this by going to Start > Connect To and then selecting the network from the list. You'll be prompted to enter the passphrase you specified earlier. That's it. Your network has been set up.
If any of the computers have problems connecting to the new wireless network, check to make sure that their network adapters are turned on and consider using computer diagnostics to rule out problems with the wireless network adapter.

How did Evasi0n manage to jailbreak iOS 6.1?

Evasi0n Jailbreak

There’s no shortage of excited people across the world right now, as the iOS 6.1 jailbreak continues to liberate more iPhones and iPads every second. At long last, after months of trying, users are once again able to fully appreciate iOS 6.1. Under the hood, this seeming simple jailbreak has managed to locate an entirely new point of attack that allowes the users access to the rest of the operating system.
The jailbreak process is a battle between Apple and developers that are usually looking for exploits in their free time. Each version of iOS has offered a new challenge for these elite few, as Apple has fixed the exploit that was found in the previous version. This isn’t a bad thing, especially in cases where the vulnerability could be used by those with malicious intent to cause real harm to your iDevice. Unfortunately, we’ve reached a point where Apple has spent considerable time and money sealing up these exploits. The Evasi0n jailbreak is so impressive because it takes an entirely new approach to delivering an exploit that allows root access to iOS.
Many of the previous jailbreak techniques relied on a memory corruption process that escalated the user privileges from the normal user state to super user. Evasi0n doesn’t use this method, most likely because Apple’s recent anti-exploit work has removed this as a possible point of entry. Instead, an application is installed on the iPhone or iPad that takes advantage of the open nature of Apple’s backup files.
When you back up files on your iPhone or iPad, the backup can be applied to any other iDevice. This is a fantastic feature in the event that something happens to your iPad. You can buy a replacement piece of hardware and have all of your apps and data restored in minutes. It’s a killer tool that isn’t provided by any other mobile platform right now.
Evasi0n Jailbreak
That also means that this data isn’t digitally signed, and the operating system relies on a super user to apply the backup and reboot your device. This provided Evasi0n with an entry point to inject the necessary files within the backup data. From here, an app is created that iOS treats as though it was part of the backup. This app modified the rules that govern how iOS responds to external requests made by the computer you are currently connected to.
Then the app on your PC can deliver Cydia to the device so it can be installed once super user status has been permanently accessed. Alongside Cydia is a new configuration file that is injected into the filesystem. This file is activated when the iPhone or iPad reboots, which in turn runs Evasi0n during boot. This makes sure that, every time the device boots, you are granted the Super User status to do most of the things you find in Cydia.
Unlike many previous exploits, Evasi0n is something that can really only be done by the user. Since it requires interaction on both the computer and the iDevice, the only way this exploit could be used to maliciously jailbreak an iOS 6.1 device would be if there was malicious code running on your computer already. While many users will never know much more about this exploit that the simple series of buttons that you have to push in order to see your iPhone reboot with the Cydia app icon on your home screen, the efforts that went into providing this to users is an impressive testament to the dedicated team responsible for this jailbreak.

Stats reveal the explosive popularity of the Evasi0n iOS 6.1 jailbreak

Evasi0n Traffic
It’s not a shock to see that, given the recent drought, there’s been a surge in jailbreaking iOS this week. The Evasi0n jailbreak tool has finally enabled the liberation of both the iPad mini and the iPhone 5, granting all of iOS 6 and up access to the benefits of super user access.
In case you’re curious, here’s what the massive surge of usage looks like:
Evasi0n Traffic
Cydia creator Saurik has had an interesting time recently. It was estimated that the Evasion jailbreak tool was downloaded 100,000 times within the first ten minutes of it being available. The jailbreak itself only takes about five minutes, and after that there’s only one thing to do. You tap that Cydia icon and begin pillaging the shelves of the unofficial App Store for your favorite apps.
Saurik reports that the traffic surge to Cydia peaked at 14,000 hits per second right after the release of Evasi0n. Instead of tapering back down, the volume of traffic headed for Cydia picked back up and has continued to tax the servers responsible for delivering most of the available content. So, if you’ve just jailbroken for the first time, and nothing in Cydia seems to work, that chances are good that the issue is not on your end.

It’s not enough to simply make a jailbreak tool that is incredibly simple to use and works on nearly every iOS device, you also have to make sure your website can sustain the sheer volume of users stampeding to your site to download it. In order to make sure their website remained stable and their download plans went off without a hitch, the Evad3rs relied on CloudFlare to keep the site up and running.
To serve the actual tool to users, the site offered Mirrors for Box.net, Mega, and RapidShare. Not long after the official release, @planetbeing of the Envad3rs commented on Twitter that they had already consumed half of the 2TB Box.net account that they created for this launch. By the end of the day, Evasi0n had consumed 4.2TB worth of downloads though Box.net alone.
jailbreak - Reddit traffic
The Evasi0n jailbreak tool has done more than just enable a whole new group of iOS devices, it’s breathed new life into the jailbreak community. A perfect example of this is the Reddit Jailbreak page. In the last month, this subreddit was nothing short of a ghost town. When you go five months without jailbreak, it’s hard to keep a conversation about that particular topic going!
The pageviews for the jailbreak subreddit erupted once the news hit that Evasi0n was live, nearly reaching 200,000 views from 25,000 views just a week before. Everywhere you look, new users are looking to get the most out of their seemingly new smartphones and tablets. Cydia is a massive place, even without the ability to add repositories, so it makes sense that new users would be looking everywhere for the best resources.
If ever there was a doubt regarding whether or not users still cared about jailbreaking or rooting their smartphones and tablets, just seeing the volume of users in the 24 hours since the release of Evasi0n should be all the proof you need. With new users comes new talent, new ideas, and new apps. Welcome to 2013, iOS users, we can’t wait to see what you do next.

PS4 retail launch expected to be a global event

   PS4_dualshock_4
Sony has already made it clear that it intends to launch the PlayStation 4 this year. But typically that has meant the PlayStation console becomes available in one territory, then there’s a few weeks before it launches in another. In the case of Europe, Sony usually keeps gamers waiting a few months before launching.
But for the PS4 that looks set to change if GameStop is to be believed. According to Mike Hogan, executive vice president of GameStop, Sony is planning a global launch for its next console. That means all the major territories (Japan, US, Europe) will get it the same day, or at least the same week.
The claim was made during a GameStop earnings call, where he also pointed out they have no idea what Microsoft has planned. Indeed, Microsoft is letting everyone wait, probably until E3, before it announces what the Xbox 720 is and when it will arrive.
A global launch for a console is difficult simply because of the amount of hardware that needs to be produced in order to make it happen. However, the PS4 is using x86 components mainly from AMD. There’s nothing really exotic about those parts, meaning Sony should have more choice about where to have the PS4 manufactured and in greater quantities. That also bodes well for the price point.
If Sony can pull off a global launch around September or October, and at a reasonable price, that bodes very well for the PS4 going into 2014. Of course it needs the games, too, but it shouldn’t be hard to at least do a better job than Nintendo has done with the Wii U so far. And if the announcement line-up was anything to go by, there’s going to be a very healthy selection of exclusive titles.

Sony says every PS4 game will be available for download

PS4 DualShock 4   Sony’s president of Worldwide Studios, Shuhei Yoshida, has been confirming a lot of details about the features of the PS4 since its launch. That includes the fact existing PSN games can't be transferred to PS4, PS3 controllers won’t be compatible with the new console, and that the machine will function offline.
Now Yoshida has confirmed another feature we have already seen rolled out with the PS Vita: every PlayStation 4 title will be made available for download. So every boxed game at retail will have an equivalent download version. He didn’t go so far as to say the download will be available on release day for every boxed game, but I think that’s safe to assume.
What Yoshida also confirmed was that Jonathan Blow’s The Witness looks to be a download release only, but he used that as an example of how Sony intends to support indie developers. By releasing such games as a download it saves on a lot of cost and allows for much cheaper price points–even as low as a “couple of dollars.”
Download versions of every game will do nothing to help GameStop’s share price, but at least it’s not a download-only console. All we need to understand now is exactly how sony intends to handle used games on the PS4. Will it be an open market just like the ps3, $269.96 at Amazon or will attempting to play a used title incur some kind of additional payment to Sony to unlock the game? Think Project Ten Dollar.
